Why n-COVID19 is not a bioweapon?

Since the coronavirus outbreak started, rumours are being circulated that the virus is laboratory made. Some from the US claimed that the virus was manufactured in a level four biosafety lab in Wuhan. Level four biosafety labs are places where researchers study some of the world’s deadliest pathogens like the Ebola virus. These biosafety labs are designed with high levels of security. Just the presence of such a lab in Wuhan does not prove that n-COVID19 was genetically edited and created there.

Some Chinese claimed that the virus has been brought in by the American army. But scientists realized that n-COVID19 resembles viruses that infect bats and pangolins more than the ones that infect humans. If n-COVID19 was actually a bioweapon, it would have been prepared from an already known virus that is deadly for humans. Using the genetic information (RNA) of the virus, researchers constructed its family tree. A family tree can tell us how the genetic information of the virus gets carried over from one host to another.  According to them, the virus jumped from some animals to humans.

What is a bioweapon?

In the past, harmful toxins released by virulent organisms like bacteria and fungi have been used as biological weapons. These pathogens would be deliberately released in order to infect individuals or enemy populations during conflicts. For example, Bacillus anthracis, bacteria that causes the disease anthrax has been used as a weapon.

Most pathogens that are used as bioweapons cause deadly diseases. While n-COVID19 causes a serious illness it does not kill at a higher rate. Hence, there is little to no evidence to back the claim that n-COVID19 is a bioweapon.

  1. Thank you very much for your work towards stopping the spread of misinformation especially such misinformation as the conspiracy theory you’ve debunked here because it has the potential to cause a lot of panic and that’s the last thing we need during this troubling times. Your information was clearly and sensibly put forward and we really appreciate it.
